If your organization is running Microsoft Dynamics NAV — any version — you are facing a migration to Business Central. The question is not whether to migrate, but when and how. This guide addresses both.

Which NAV Versions Are Still Supported?

Microsoft's mainstream support for all NAV versions ended in 2023. Extended support timelines vary by version, but organizations on NAV 2009 through NAV 2018 should be treating migration as an active priority rather than a future consideration.

The Migration Options

There are three primary paths for NAV-to-BC migration:

1. Cloud Migration (SaaS): Microsoft's preferred path. Use the Cloud Migration tool to lift historical data into Business Central online. Best for organizations that want to standardize on the Microsoft-managed cloud platform.
2. Full Reimplementation: Treat the migration as a fresh implementation. Configure BC from scratch, migrate only master data and open transactions. More work upfront but produces the cleanest result.
3. Technical Upgrade: Upgrade the underlying platform while preserving existing customizations. Highest risk, appropriate only for organizations with extensive NAV customizations they cannot yet retire.

The Data Migration Challenge

Regardless of migration path, data migration is typically the highest-risk component. NAV databases frequently contain years of accumulated inconsistencies, orphaned records, and customized field structures that don't map cleanly to standard BC.
