How to Choose a Business Central Implementation Partner

The partner selection process is the most consequential decision in your implementation. Here's the framework for getting it right.

Microsoft's Business Central partner ecosystem includes thousands of certified partners across North America. They range from boutique specialists with deep domain expertise to large generalist practices that implement dozens of different products. Choosing the right one for your organization is the single most important implementation decision you will make.

Why Microsoft Certification Level Is Not Enough

The Microsoft Gold/Solutions Partner designation tells you a partner has met Microsoft's training and certification requirements. It tells you very little about whether they are the right partner for your specific project. We have seen Gold partners deliver terrible implementations and small boutique firms deliver exceptional ones.

The Criteria That Actually Matter

  • Industry experience: Has the partner implemented BC for organizations similar to yours — in your industry, at your scale, with similar process complexity?
  • Implementation methodology: Does the partner have a documented, repeatable implementation methodology? Can they walk you through it in detail?
  • Reference quality: Not just whether references exist, but whether they are willing to describe problems that occurred and how they were resolved.
  • Team stability: Who will actually work on your project? What is their experience level? What is the partner's staff turnover rate?
  • Post-go-live support: What does ongoing support look like? Who handles it?

Red Flags in the Selection Process

Partners who resist detailed reference conversations, who can't describe their implementation methodology, or who propose go-live timelines that seem unrealistically aggressive should be treated with caution. A proposal that promises everything at a suspiciously low price is the most dangerous of all.
